Training for Life
Taking on a dog is a lifetime commitment. This means way more than putting a roof over the dog’s head for life. Many people learn that continuing training is part of that lifetime commitment.
Leonard the Labrador cross came to puppy school with us. The family was besotted with this puppy and hoped he would be a good companion for their older dog. They chose to do their adolescent training at a local pet shop and not with us. Shortly after thatLeonard started attacking the older dog at home.
The people called for a consultation. We set up strategies and routines at home to help with Lenny’s attitude. I recommended a follow-up visit but this never eventuated.
Eighteen months later they rang saying that Leonard was attacking the other dog again and was reactive on the lead. We did another private session to add strategies and I recommended a follow up visit soon after. That was 6 weeks ago. Too long. They’re now distressed because Leonard has attacked the other dog again. Now they want to re-home him.
Hmmm… broken dogs don’t make very good rescue dogs.
